Dress Code

In addition to intrinsic personality traits and extrinsic academic achievements, children also may express their individuality and need for autonomy through their clothing choices and personal presentation. Especially in middle school, students frequently experiment with fashion and begin to develop a personal style.  It can be challenging to develop a school dress code that simultaneously provides sufficient latitude for such expression while maintaining a positive, safe, distraction-free learning environment where education can flourish.

Dress codes generally are instituted for safety reasons (sadly, in many settings these include the reduction of gang-related activity). Such policies also are adopted to prevent or reduce conflict and stress related to peer pressure, socioeconomic status, and the power and influence of the media and technology. The focus in school should be on learning rather than appearance.

In general, I want you to come to Room 71 ready to learn and have fun. I don't want clothing to be an issue that stops the learning process. If the room is too hot or too cold, layer your clothing--bring a sweatshirt that you can easily use during class. Comfort is important and balancing this with an academic and scholarly mind set will help you be dressed for success.
